7th May

During this session we studied how to form the present continuous in English and its uses.
This new tense is formed by the verb "to be" in the present tense, followed by the main verb in the -ing form.

 am/is/are+verb-ing
I'm wearing
You're wearing
He's wearing

First we read the text in the coursebook, on p.97. We looked at the scene and complete the gaps with the colours and clothes.(t.13.2)
After that, we put into practise the new grammar point describing someone's clothes in the class and then, our own clothes.
We also learnt that to describe what someone is wearing we use the verb "to wear " in present continous: I'm wearing a T-shirt", and to talk about complements like bags or umbrellas we use "to carry": I'm carrying a black handbag".
The main use of the present continuous in English is to describe an action which is happening at the moment of speaking, and it's usually found with expressions of time like: now, right now, at the moment.
To consolidate the use of the present comtinuous, we asked questions about the pictures on p.98. The question to ask was: What are they doing?
After that, we played a miming game. The students read one card and had to act out the action.
We finished the class, comparing the present simple and continuous. The main difference is that we use the present simple to describe routines, daily habits...and the continuous to describe something that is happening now.
We completed one text on p.98 with the correct verbs, and then, we listened and read other text and wrote true sentences about it.

Homework: WB- Unit 13, ex.3-6
Read the text on p.101 and complete exercises 3,4

Friday 3 May 2013

The students first, identidied the places where they could find the signs and then matched them with their meanings.
After that, they listened to some lines of conversation and wrote the letter of the sign they went with (T.12.10)
Then, we studied the differences between countable and uncountsble nouns in English and learnt that we use:
a/an for singular countable nouns, for example, an apple, a bottle...
some for plural coountable nouns, some apples, some bottles in affirmative sentences
for uncountable nouns, some money, some sugar in affirmative sentences
any, for plural countable nouns, any apples, any bootles,  in interrogative and negative sentences
for uncountable nouns, any money, any sugar, in interrogative and negative sentences.

And finally we studied the vocabulary related to colours and clothes.

Friday 26 April 2013

25th April

During this session we continued working the differences between would like+noun, would like to+verb.

We started the class listening to a couple talking about his birthday, the students had to tell why the man was not happy and what the woman wanted to do. After that they need to complete the blanks in a dialogue.
Then, we listened to 3 people talking about their birthday wishes and they students completed a chart. To consolidate these 2 structures, they students had to interviewed their partners asking:
What would you like for your birthday?
What would you like to do on your birthday?

After that, we studied another important structure: Like+verb-ing, like+noun

First we listened to 2 dialogues and the students decides which conversation was about what you like day after day and which conversation was about what you want to do now.

To finish the class, we did two oral activities. In one of them, the students talked about what they liked doing, theiir hobbies,etc...ANd so, we could practise the structure like+verb-ing
And in the other one, we consolidated the structure would like to+infinitive verb, to talk about our dreams in the near future.

Work online the grammar and exercises:
like and would like

Homework: Photocopy like+ing, exercises a,b

Friday 19 April 2013

18th April

Today, we finished unit 11 doing a role-play actvity. The students had to write a dialogue about a problem, and the read it out in class.
After that, we started a new unit. In unit 12 we talked about places (shops) and the activities you can do in those places. We listened to Adam shopping and tried to completed the conversations (T.12.2)
We learnt about a new structure: I'd Like...(I would like). We use this phrase to ask for things politely in a shop:
I'd like some ham, please

Or we can also ask for things or offer them with a question:

Would you like anything else?
Would you like something to eat?
We also remember when to use some/any:
some: affirmative
any: negative and questions
But we noticed that when we want to offer something to a friend we use some and not any in the question.

Would you like some cake?

This is because we expect a positive answer and we want our friend to feel comfortable.
We continued with another listening comprehension exercise, ex.2, and we completed 2 dialogues between Adam and a friend of his. To consolidate this new structure we role-played a situation with a classmate: we had to make our friend feel at home and offer him something to eat, drink or do.
We finished the class starting the grammar exercises form the photocopies. They need to be completed at home.
Homework: WB unit 12, ex.1-5

First, we listened to a girl, Jennifer, talking about herself. The students listened and ticked the activities she can do and then, we asked our classmates and teacher.(T.11.6)
We also learnt how to form adverbs from verbs. The regular way is to add the siffix -ly to the adjective. But we studied some irregular forms like well, hard and fast.
To apply this new grammar rule, we practised with our partners asking and answering questions about our abilities.
To finish the class, we learnt that CAN has another value: it is used to ask for permission, request and offer. We first reordered some words to create a request question and then, we matched the questions with their answers.

Affirmative: I can dance
Negative: I can't dance
Interrogative: Can you dance?

To finish the class we listened to Oliver and Dominique and tried to complete the gaps in the dialogue (T.11.4)

14th March

We continued working with the past simple of the regular/irregular verbs.
During this class, we studied how to ask questions and how to negate in the past simple tense. We use the auxiliary verb "do" and we apply the same rules as for the present simple.
Questions
(Wh-question)+did+subject+verb?
Negatives
Subject+didn't+verb

We have to remember that the main verb is in the infinitive form without to.

Then, we listened to Angie and Rick talking about their weekend (T10.3). The students listened and complete the dialogue. After that, we practise some questions in the past to talk about our last weekend and yesterday. Then, we completed some questions and checked the information and finally they told what Angie didn't do.
To finish the class, we completed a gapped text with the correct form of the verbs in the past and did an oral activity to practise thew new grammatical structures.

Yesterday, we continued working with the past simple. We corrected some pending exercises from the photocopies and we did an activity in which the students had to review the past simple of the irregular verbs and some common expressions which go with these verbs.

Then, we started the new lesson, unit 10. During this lesson, the students will study the past simple of the regular verbs.
First, we listened to Angie talking about her weekend. The students had to tick the actions she mentioned and then, report the information to their classmates.(T.10.1)

We learnt that the past regular tense is formed adding "-ed" at the end of the infinitive form. What is peculiar about these verbs is their pronunciation.
We can pronounce the past tense in 3 different forms /t/,/d/ or /Id/. Everything depends on the pronunciation of the final letter in the infinitive form.
watched= /t/
listened=/d/
needed= /Id/
want=/Id/

In this unit, we study prepositions of place and the verbal structure: there is/are.
To introduce the topic, we talk about our houses, if we live in a house or a flat. Then, we focus on some pictures of parts of a house and we match the numbers with the things in the house.
After that, we revise the structure there is/are.

There is a table=singular
There are some tables= plural
There isn't a table= negative+singular
There aren't any tables= negative+plural
Is there a table?= interrogative+singular
Are there any tables?= interrogative+plural

To consolidate this new structre we do some practical exercises. First, we listen to Robert describing his living room, the students have to complete the text.
Then, we look at the photo of Robert's room. We describe it using the vocabulary from ex.2 and there is/are and ask questions about it, too.
Finally, we listen to Robert's conversation with his mother and the students need to answer some comprehension exercises.

EXAMENES FEBRERO

5 FEBRERO  16.30HRS
COMPRESIÓN ORAL
COMPRENSIÓN ESCRITA
EXPRESIÓN ESCRITA

7 FEBRERO
ORALES 16.15

22nd January

We start a new lesson, unit 7.

During this unit we'll learn about objective and possessive pronouns, demonstratives and requests (Can I...?).
We start the class asking our partner about his/her favourites, using the question:

What's your favourite...food/drink/sport...?

We continue revising the question words:

What/when/where/how/who/how much/how many/why

Remember that these question words come at the beginning of a question. And sometimes they accompany a noun/adjective when we want to know some specific information. For example,

What colour is your car?
What drinks do you like?
How old is your daughter?
How many languages do you speak?

Then, we read and listened about Gina's website (T7.1) and complete some sentences with possessive adjectives and object pronouns.

We study that object pronouns are used in place of a noun, thay come after a verb or a preposition:

I love him!
I'm in love with him!

Subject Object
I        me
you        you
he        him
she          her
it         it
we          us
you                 you
they          them

We also correct a short text (p. 49, ex.6) about Gina and we finish the class studying the possessive pronouns: they are used in place of a possessive adjective+noun.

That's my car=That car is mine. It's not yours!

possessive adjective possessive pronoun
my mine
your yours
his his
her hers

Today, we study how to make questions and negative sentences in the present simple but in the third person singular.
Does he/she like pizza?
Yes he does.
No she doesn't
He/she doesn't like pizza.

First, we do an exercise of completing sentences with the information from Elliot's text. Then, we read the grammar point on p. 125 and put into practice the new structures with an oral activity and a grammatical exercise (p. 43, ex. 5,6).
To close the grammar point we finally complete a chart with the present simple forms.
And after that, we listen to a phone conversation between Elliot and his sister Lois (t.6.12). The students write the missing words in the dialogue.

8th January

We start the class revising the days of the week and the prepositions of time. To consolidate the new structures we complete the exercise 5 on page 47 and ask the questions to our classmates and then, we listen to a pop song 'Friday I'm in love'(The Cure) and complete the blanks in the lyrics.
After that, we read about Elliot's day on page 42. Then, we do a comprehension exercise in which the students have to write the times in a series of sentences.
The students learn about the third person singular in English. To form it we need to add an -s at the end of the verb. And they also study the meaning, use and position of the frequency adverbs like 'always, sometimes and never' (before a verb but after the verb to be).
To finish, the class we practise the pronunciation of the -s at the end of the verbs.
In our next class we'll learn how to form questions and negatives in the third person singular.
Homework.
